Nick Jonas is making a grand return to Broadway after nearly 13 years, but his comeback came with an unexpected—and hilarious—fashion fail. While preparing for his role in The Last Five Years, Jonas found himself in a breezy situation that had everyone in rehearsals cracking up.
The Jealous singer took to Instagram to share the story with his 35 million followers, detailing a major wardrobe malfunction that left him quite exposed.
“I was singing Moving Too Fast, one of my character Jamie’s songs,” Jonas explained in the clip. “I’m supposed to jump onto this platform and then pull my co-star up onto the platform with me and keep singing.”
Sounds simple enough—until disaster struck.
“I do it, and I hear a [ripping sound]. And I’m like, ‘Oh no, oh no.’ Then I feel a cool breeze in a place you don’t want to feel a cool breeze.”
To prove just how disastrous the moment was, Jonas held up his pants to the camera, revealing a massive tear right in the groin area. “They’re not tight pants by any means,” he laughed. “It just was the perfect spot and the position that I jumped up.”
The mishap happened at the worst possible time, in front of some heavyweights in the theater world—including director Whitney White, legendary composer Jason Robert Brown, his co-star Adrienne Warren, and an entire stage crew.
But Jonas, ever the professional, tried to keep the show going. He attempted some DIY fixes—duct tape, safety pins—you name it. Nothing worked.
Luckily, Broadway’s got solutions for everything, and the stage management team quickly ran to Target to grab some black shorts so he could finish rehearsals without any further exposure.
Jonas is set to star opposite Tony Award winner Adrienne Warren in The Last Five Years, a musical that dives deep into the highs and lows of a failed marriage, told from two perspectives—one moving forward in time, the other backward. The production is set to debut on March 18, marking Jonas’ return to Broadway since his 2012 run in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. He also previously appeared in Annie Get Your Gun, Beauty and the Beast, and Les Misérables as a child actor.
Despite the wardrobe hiccup, Jonas seems more than ready to step back onto the Broadway stage. And let’s be real—after this, his performance might be even more seamless because, well, he’s definitely double-checking his pants before showtime.
