The easiest version of this record would have been a sample clearance and a nostalgia play. 2Rare and Amerie chose something more interesting.
On "BussDown (1 Thing)," the Philadelphia rapper does not simply reach backward for one of R&B's most recognizable records. Amerie actually steps back into the booth, recording new vocals for a Hitmaka-produced reworking that places her signature 2005 hit inside a much younger club and rap vocabulary.
The record carries more history than its title initially lets on. Hitmaka's production pulls from Amerie's "1 Thing" while also folding in the rhythmic DNA of Busta Rhymes' 1997 classic "Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See," creating a mash-up of two records whose percussion has remained instantly recognizable across generations. That additional Busta Rhymes connection gives "BussDown" a deeper hip-hop lineage than a straightforward Amerie flip.
Instead of just slapping a recycled sample onto a fresh beat, "BussDown" plays as a genuine, two-way collaboration. Amerie actually stepped back into the booth to record fresh vocals for the track, a refreshing shift in an era flooded with quick, sped-up 2000s flips. Rather than watching her legacy get sampled from a distance, the voice behind the original classic is actively shaping its next chapter.
"'1 Thing' has always been such a special song to me, and I love seeing it continue to connect with new listeners," Amerie said in a statement accompanying the release. "Working with 2Rare on this record brought a fresh energy to the song while still honoring what made the original so timeless. I'm excited for people to hear what we created together and to experience '1 Thing' in a whole new way."

Amerie isn't just letting her catalog get sampled, she's steering the remake herself. That hands-on involvement elevates "BussDown" beyond a quick nostalgia play, giving new momentum to a hit that’s survived every era from radio to streaming.
For 2Rare, that backing is massive. Known for dance-floor energy and melodic trap, the 2023 XXL Freshman gets more than just a hot beat here; he gets a direct bridge to R&B canon, backed by the legend who built it.
"It's really a full circle moment. '1 Thing' came out when I was five years old, and I grew up hearing Amerie through my mom," he said. "Now she's putting new vocals on my version of the record. She keeps thanking me for bringing new life to it, but I'm the one thanking her for giving me that blessing. It feels like two generations meeting at the perfect time."
Back in September, Amerie, 2Rare, and Hitmaka teased studio footage of the record coming together, giving fans an early peek at the session long before the final master dropped.
That generational crossover translates seamlessly to the screen in the official video. Directed by BAHSPOV, the visual balances 2Rare's storyline with full performance scenes from Amerie and her dance crew, giving her real agency rather than a token cameo. It drives home what makes the collaboration work: neither the iconic sample nor the icon behind it are being swept under the rug.
