Conrad announced his intentions in all caps on Aug 13, calling the album alternative, reggae, dancehall and rebellion, and the thirty minutes that followed back him up. Reggae from an alternative R&B singer usually shows up as a summer novelty, one song deep and gone by October, so committing a whole project to it and booking a dancehall bashment to launch the thing reads as something other than a seasonal detour.
The turn is less a pivot than a homecoming for a singer born in Tampa in 2000 and raised by a Jamaican-born mother, who came up posting on Vine and wrote for Kehlani and Ambré before Colorway, Satin and two volumes of Submissive. "Favorite Lover" is bass-forward and unhurried, a hookup song that knows it was only ever a hookup, and the hook lands harder because he refuses to pretend otherwise.
