Oh No

Rema

Afrobeats Dancehall Reggaeton Zouk Kompa

Rema steps off the Afrobeats template for "Oh No," where Rvssian folds kompa, zouk, dancehall and reggaeton into a mid-tempo groove built for two-stepping.

Why we’re listening

Rvssian builds "Oh No" on a loping Afro-Caribbean sway rather than the bounce Rema usually rides. Kompa and zouk phrasing sit next to dancehall and reggaeton accents, and none of it crowds the rest out of the mix. Rema stays relaxed across the top, where the hook, a repeated plea for a woman's body and soul, reads as flirtation and surrender at the same time. He never raises his voice to sell either one.

The record is light enough to slip past on a first listen and built to pull you back, which is how it plays on a late-night floor. Anyone who arrived through "Calm Down" gets the same instinct for melody working over a rhythm he has not used before.
