Why we’re listening

The most Detroit thing released all week, and he earns that. He is from there, he came up singing in his father's church choir, and the record is built on a walking bassline, horn stabs sitting just behind the vocal and a refusal to hurry. What keeps it from being a costume piece is the subject, a man being told he is only wanted once everybody else has stopped answering.

That is a harder sentiment than the arrangement lets on, and he sings it without raising his voice, which is the correct choice and a rare one.
