LL Cool J has worked Las Vegas stages before, including an arena date at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on his 2023 F.O.R.C.E. Live tour, but on Thursday (Oct 29) he announced a booking that keeps him on the Strip for weeks rather than a single night. Rock the Bells: The Residency opens Saturday, May 15, 2027, at Dolby Live at Park MGM and runs 11 shows, split between a five-night spring block and a six-night summer block.
The May dates fall on the 15th, 16th, 19th, 21st and 22nd. After a break of nearly seven weeks, the production returns July 9, 10, 11, 14, 16 and 17, closing on a Saturday just as it opens on one. Presales end tonight at 10 p.m. PT, and general tickets go on sale Monday (Nov 2) at 10 a.m. PT.
Long before it became a company, Rock the Bells was a song title. The single appeared on Radio, the 1985 debut that helped make the Queens teenager an early Def Jam Recordings star. He transformed the name into a media, merchandise, and live-events business in 2018. The following year, he prevailed in court against promoters who had used Rock the Bells for touring festivals since the 2000s.
The residency takes its shape from that company rather than from a greatest-hits revue, pairing his own catalog with DJs, immersive storytelling and special guests drawn from several generations of the genre. "Hip-Hop started in a few neighborhoods in New York, and now it belongs to the whole world," LL Cool J said in a statement. "Along the way it changed rock, R&B, pop, soul, dance music, all of it. Rock The Bells celebrates everybody who was part of that story." He closed with a line aimed squarely at the room he will be playing: "This isn't me doing a show in Vegas. It's all of us."
None of those guests has been named, and the lineup Rock the Bells has already announced belongs to a different stage. The brand's Thanksgiving weekend festival lands Sunday, Nov. 29, at Newark's Prudential Center, with Lil' Kim, Method Man and Redman, SWV, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah and a D-Nice set on the bill. It is a roster HitsCulture detailed when the Sugarhill Gang and the Furious Five signed on in September. Nothing in the Las Vegas announcement ties any of those artists to Dolby Live, so buyers this week are paying for an LL Cool J show whose supporting cast will be filled in later.
He arrives at Park MGM as a two-time Grammy winner and a 2021 inductee into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The residency announcement also bills him as the first rap artist to string together 10 consecutive platinum-or-better albums. "I Need Love," "Going Back to Cali," "Around the Way Girl" and "Mama Said Knock You Out" give the set list its spine, records that carried a Def Jam rapper onto pop radio between 1987 and 1991.
The Las Vegas booking also extends a late-career run of activity. The F.O.R.C.E. Live tour was his first arena tour in roughly three decades, and in 2024 he released The FORCE, his first album in 11 years, with Q-Tip handling much of the production.
Before any of that reaches the Strip, Rock the Bells has to get through Newark, where the Nov. 29 show is set to close out Hip-Hop History Month. Opening night at Dolby Live comes 167 days later.
