Westside Gunn was supposed to be taking a victory lap. For months the Buffalo rapper pointed fans toward Awesome God 3, the record he had billed as his final solo album, and every sneaker drop seemed to march that way. Then on Thursday (Oct 22) he swerved, announcing a new 16-track album called HEELMATIC for Friday, November 13, through Griselda Records and Mass Appeal.
The title is the sort of pun that feels inevitable the second you hear it. In wrestling the heel is the villain the crowd pays to boo, a role Gunn has played with relish for years. Bolting that word onto Illmatic carries extra sting because Mass Appeal is the company Nas co-founded. Dropping a twist on the most revered debut in New York rap through Nas's own label is the musical version of cutting a promo in the champ's arena.
Gunn said the change of plan came from watching the label's Legend Has It series, the run of albums from elders like Slick Rick, Ghostface Killah, Raekwon and Mobb Deep. In a post on X he explained that the series pushed him to set the finale aside and build something new. He says he cut it in secret near the Eiffel Tower, at the Acropolis in Athens, inside Saucony's offices and in Berlin and Chicago.
His own sales pitch arrived months earlier in the all-caps register his followers know by heart. "ALBUM OTW AND ITS ALL GRIMEY, DUSTY, SOULFUL, JAZZ INSPIRED mixed with FLYEST SHIT U EVER HEARD IN YA LIFE," he posted this summer. The label's announcement promises a fresh production approach that keeps the core of his sound intact.
The first look is "ZILLA," produced by longtime collaborator Denny LaFlare and billed by Gunn's team as his first release with Mass Appeal. Its video, shot on location in Egypt, premiered on Instagram on August 26, so Thursday's drop moved a clip the faithful had already studied onto streaming services and YouTube. LaFlare is one of the producers Gunn described to The FADER in 2022 as family, alongside Conductor Williams. On the record Gunn makes room for a drive-by staged from the back of a Waymo and a bar that sets Jeff Bezos as the finish line.
The tracklist reads like a Griselda scavenger hunt. "Martin 4sese" winks at Scorsese, "Tommy Heelfiger" runs a designer label through the wrestling filter, and "Price Choppers" borrows a supermarket name anyone raised upstate will clock. The closer is "Upstate Farm." "Egyptian Cadillac" extends a thread that started with "Egypt" on last year's surprise Heels Have Eyes EP, the song that later picked up a Doechii remix. Guest features and full production credits have not been announced.
HEELMATIC also caps a year in which Gunn spent plenty of time on other people's records. He turns up twice on Erykah Badu and The Alchemist's Before the World Blows: The Abi and Alan Experiment, first on "Crossfade" with DJ Creole Princess and Joi and again on "No I.D." That album reached listeners on August 28 after a year of delays, and we followed it right up to the week it finally locked its release date.
Away from the booth, his Saucony partnership kept stacking. The Grid Jazz 9 "Awesome God", wrapped in multi-tone faux fur and iridescent leather, dropped August 28, the day Buffalo marks as Westside Gunn Day. It sold for $225 through Saucony's EQL raffle and his own Blientele.com. The brand said portions of Awesome God 3 were recorded at its Boston Innovation Hub, which leaves open whether those sessions fed HEELMATIC or are still waiting on the finale Gunn postponed. A Spider-Man-themed ProGrid Omni 9 Web he previewed at Paris Fashion Week still has no release date.
Then comes the road. Shortly after the album lands, Gunn heads overseas for the Heel the World Tour 2: Still Healing, hitting Birmingham's O2 Institute on February 3 and Glasgow's SWG3 two nights later. Bristol and German stops including Munich, Hamburg and Leipzig are also on the books. The first Heel the World leg reached London's Forum and Manchester Academy in June. That is a long way from January 2023, when he scrapped his first European tour a day before it began and said the cancellation cost him around $50,000 upfront.
He carries momentum from a 2025 that produced 12, Heels Have Eyes 2 on Westside Gunn Day and Heels Have Eyes 3 on Halloween. His Fourth Rope wrestling promotion keeps the ringside obsession running as an actual business. The heel picked his date accordingly. HEELMATIC arrives on Friday the 13th.
