Why we’re listening
Halle marks the first anniversary of her debut by reopening it, adding five songs to the back of love?... or something like it on Friday (Oct 23) rather than starting a second chapter. The original 15 tracks stay put, so the Chlöe reunion on "so i can feel again" and the H.E.R. duet "no warning" lead into the new material instead of competing with it. The title track finally gets a song to match it, a Lucky Daye duet produced by Bongo ByTheWay and BonxuBlessedIt, where the two trade verses about jumping into a romance they can't yet name. "Love is constantly evolving, and so are we," she said of the expansion, and the sequencing treats the five additions as a postscript the first album was still writing.
The new stretch runs from "leave me blue" and "don't leave" through "potion" and closes on "way out," a slow walk from pleading to exit in under 15 minutes. "potion" is the one that gives the set its clearest line, with Halle wishing for "a man who doesn't waste my time" and then assembling one from parts of two exes, a conceit K. Michelle and Muni Long have each worked from different angles. Listeners who came in on "Angel" and "In Your Hands" will find her still in the same register, intimate and close-miked, but the lyrics now sit on the far side of the question the album title asks.
