The title is her first name, which most people who have heard her voice do not know. 'Growing up, I went by my middle name, Kareen, but Naji always felt beside me,' she said in the album announcement, and she describes the two names as two working modes: Kareen, who grieves and tries to make sense of everything, and Naji, who is more direct and less afraid to say what it is without folding. The record was written through grief, adoption, a move from Georgia to Los Angeles and a run of losses in her family, and the production sits across alternative R&B, ambient soul, indie pop and electronic texture. Daoud produced all thirteen tracks, 'OFFLINE' arrived in July as the first single, and the running order breaks at position four for a twenty-one-second interlude called 'idontwannawait.' Ten years of work carrying other people's names ends with a record carrying her own.
