Kenny Banks Sr. has played on Lizz Wright's records since her 2003 debut Salt, and Nearness is the first time they have made one as a duo, with Banks on piano and organ and guitarist Chris Bruce producing. The 11 tracks move between standards like Hoagy Carmichael's "The Nearness of You" and spirituals like "Deep River" and "How I Got Over," with almost nothing around Wright's contralto but Banks' arrangements. She describes her approach to the old songs as "taking old tools out of a museum," and the blues "Amazing Grace" that first connected them at an Atlanta jam session is here too.
