Anderson .Paak and Cordae announced "A Good Day" on Monday (Sept 14) with a 20-second clip of the two dressed as old men, sitting outside and talking. EMPIRE confirmed hours later that the single and its video arrive Wednesday, Sept 16. It is the first release from Heavy Is the Crown, the joint album due October 23 through APESHIT, Mass Appeal and EMPIRE. The song is built on Bill Withers' "Lovely Day," the 1977 Columbia single that still holds the longest sustained note of any top 40 hit in the United States, at 18 seconds.
The costume choice fits the source material better than it first appears, since Withers was 39 when "Lovely Day" came out and already wrote like a man at peace with a slow morning. He wrote the song with Skip Scarborough for the album Menagerie, and it peaked at No. 30 on the Hot 100 and No. 6 on the R&B chart. Those numbers understate how far it traveled afterward. The S.O.U.L. S.Y.S.T.E.M. version with Michelle Visage hit No. 34 on the Hot 100 in 1992 from The Bodyguard soundtrack. Kirk Franklin interpolated it into "Gonna Be a Lovely Day" in 1998, and LL Cool J sampled it for "LLovely Day" in 2010. The song carries a long paper trail of yeas from the people who control it.
A Withers flip in 2026 is a two-sided clearance. The composition sits with the Withers and Scarborough interests, and the master sits with Sony, which owns the Columbia catalog. Withers died in March 2020 at 81. Neither the artists nor the labels have said what the deal for "A Good Day" looks like, or whether the record uses a lifted sample or a replayed interpolation. What is known is that the song reached a release date with a video attached, which is further than most Withers requests get. EMPIRE is leading the campaign with it rather than burying it in the tracklist.
The other name that has followed this pairing from the start is J. Cole. He produced "RNP" for Cordae's debut The Lost Boy, released July 23, 2019. Cole then co-produced "Two Tens" with Dem Jointz in January 2023 and co-produced "Summer Drop" with Free Nationals bassist Kelsey Gonzalez in 2024. Every song the two have released together has run through his hands. The August album announcement listed him alongside 9th Wonder, Conductor Williams and Swizz Beatz as producers connected to the project, though no track-by-track credits exist yet. Whether Cole touched "A Good Day" specifically is unconfirmed, and a Withers flip on a lead single is a bigger swing than the self-contained bounce he gave them on "RNP" seven years ago.
.Paak is announcing all of this from the road, where he is working Bruno Mars' Romantic Tour as DJ Pee .Wee and performing the Silk Sonic catalog. The Heavy Is the Crown artwork nods to Step Brothers, which puts the old-men clip and the album cover on the same joke. The single drops Wednesday, the album follows five weeks later, and the credits will say how heavy Cole's hand actually was.
