Isaiah Rashad announced a second leg of Lil Sunny's Awful Road Trip on Tuesday (Sept 8), built around the tenth anniversary of The Sun's Tirade, and the routing ends where he started. The North American run opens November 4 at the Crystal Ballroom in Portland and hits Camp Flog Gnaw in Los Angeles on November 15. It closes November 25 at The Signal in Chattanooga, the night before Thanksgiving, in the city that raised him. From there the tour crosses to Dublin on January 10 and works through the UK and Europe until Warsaw on January 31. A Honolulu date on February 23 leads into New Zealand and Australia, and the whole run finishes in Perth on March 7, 2027. Artist presale opened September 10 and general tickets went on sale September 11 through Ticketmaster and itsbeenawful.com, with VIP packages that include a pre-show lounge and early merch access.

The first leg is still on the road. Rashad played Knoxville, Nashville and Memphis this past week with Alemeda opening select dates, and he heads through Texas, Denver, Salt Lake City and Arizona next. That leg ends with an Anniversary Show at YouTube Theater in Inglewood on September 29 that covers all four of his projects, followed by two South Africa dates in Cape Town and Johannesburg. The tour takes its name from It's Been Awful, the album he released in May after a five-year gap, and the anniversary framing arrived once the new record had a few months to settle.

The Sun's Tirade came out September 2, 2016 on Top Dawg Entertainment, and the numbers around it explain why it gets called the label's quietest classic. It debuted at No. 17 on the Billboard 200 with 19,000 copies sold in its first week. That same year Kendrick Lamar's untitled unmastered. opened at No. 1 in March and ScHoolboy Q's Blank Face LP opened at No. 2 in July. Nobody at TDE was pushing Rashad as the headline act that year. The record has since gone Gold, and "Wat's Wrong," the Kendrick and Zacari collaboration on it, has been certified Platinum. The lone advance single, "Free Lunch," arrived August 4, 2016, less than a month before the album, which tells you how little runway the campaign had.

What the album had instead was a guest list and a production bench that read like a TDE family reunion before the label had one to sell. SZA, Jay Rock, Syd, SiR, Kari Faux and Zacari all appear, and the credits run from Mike Will Made It to a young Steve Lacy to Cam O'bi. The songs move between trap, trip-hop and jazz stylings without settling on one. Rashad's voice sits low in the mix with a slur that reads as exhaustion on first listen and as craft on the tenth. He has said in interviews that he was almost dropped from TDE three times during the making of it, and the album's best songs sound like a man who knew that.

That is the record the second leg is built to honor, and the Chattanooga date carries its own weight because Rashad has never separated the album from the city. He was rapping in Chattanooga before TDE signed him, and Cilvia Demo, his 2014 debut for the label, put the city on the map for a national rap audience. The Signal sits at 21 Choo Choo Avenue and holds 1,500 in its main hall. That is small for an artist with a Platinum single and a Camp Flog Gnaw slot ten days earlier, and the scale is the choice. A hometown club show the night before Thanksgiving is booked for people who knew him before the label did and for family who never made the trip to Los Angeles.

The routing also says something about how Rashad is choosing to spend the year after his return with It's Been Awful. Most artists with a fresh album keep the setlist forward-facing, and instead he is booking the new songs and the ten-year-old ones in the same show. A Los Angeles arena date in September and a Chattanooga club date in November bookend the anniversary. The Sun's Tirade never had a victory lap in 2016. It is getting one now, on a schedule that runs from Portland to Perth and ends at home.
