Long before KAYTRANADA became a Grammy-winning festival headliner, Shay Lia was already inside the rhythm. Their earliest records did more than pair a singer with a producer. They demonstrated how his crooked drum patterns could leave room for an R&B vocalist who understood that the pocket was not something to overpower.

That chemistry returns to the foreground on “SO GOOD,” released September 4 through RCA Records and KAYTRANADA’s Stand Up Guy Records. The single is Shay Lia’s first release of 2026 and their first collaboration in nearly seven years.

“SO GOOD” moves with the familiar KAYTRANADA swing: bass that lands heavily without crowding the record, percussion that seems to lean behind the beat and synths built for motion. Lia meets it with a restrained performance, letting her vocals bend around the production instead of treating the groove as background decoration.

The official rollout describes the song as their first collaboration in nearly seven years, a reference to “CHANCES,” which appeared on KAYTRANADA’s 2018 NOTHIN LIKE U / CHANCES release. But KAYTRANADA produced “On the Low” for Shay Lia’s 2023 album FACETS, so the pair did not spend seven years creatively separated. “SO GOOD” is more precisely their first jointly billed release since that earlier run.

Shay Lia appeared on “LEAVE ME ALONE,” released ahead of KAYTRANADA’s 2016 debut album 99.9%. They also worked together on “Blue,” which KAYTRANADA co-produced with BADBADNOTGOOD, before reconnecting for “CHANCES.” Those songs helped establish a recurring feature of his catalog: dance production that remains flexible enough for R&B singers to preserve their identity inside it.

When 99.9% arrived, KAYTRANADA was still translating years of remixes, SoundCloud discoveries and Montreal club instincts into an album-length statement. “LEAVE ME ALONE” placed Lia’s voice near the entrance to that new stage of his career. The album later won the Polaris Music Prize, while its successor, BUBBA, earned KAYTRANADA the 2021 Grammy for Best Dance/Electronic Album. “10%,” his collaboration with Kali Uchis, won Best Dance Recording during the same ceremony, giving him his first two Grammy victories.

Lia used the partnership as a foundation, her 2019 project Dangerous, 2020 EP Solaris and 2023 album FACETS expanded her sound through R&B, Afropop and dance music. Discussing FACETS, she said the album “speaks to all of the lives I’ve lived in different cities, countries, times and spaces.” Its producers included GuiltyBeatz alongside KAYTRANADA, reflecting the wider musical identity she had built beyond their earliest work.

That growth changes what can be heard in “SO GOOD.” Shay Lia and KAYTRANADA link again with established catalogs, separate artistic identities and enough shared history to avoid overplaying the nostalgia.

The release also gives Stand Up Guy Records a fitting showcase. KAYTRANADA first teased the imprint in 2022, and placing Shay Lia on a release tied to it connects his expanding business footprint to one of his foundational creative relationships. RCA supplies the major-label infrastructure, but the imprint’s presence makes the record feel closer to a statement of continuity than a casual guest appearance.

“SO GOOD” does not attempt to recreate 2016. Its appeal comes from hearing two artists return to the same pocket with more experience and no need to prove that the formula still belongs to them. A decade after 99.9%, Shay Lia remains one of the clearest reminders that KAYTRANADA’s sound was never built by drums alone.
