Stevie Wonder is taking Songs in the Key of Life around the world for its 50th anniversary, with 18 performances across Europe, the United Kingdom and the United States beginning in October.

The newly announced Songs in the Key of Life Performances: 50th Anniversary Tour will feature Wonder performing his landmark 1976 album in its entirety. The itinerary opens October 13 in Birmingham and moves through Paris, Copenhagen, Oslo, Stockholm, Hannover, Cologne and Amsterdam before reaching Ireland and returning to the U.K. The six-date U.S. leg begins November 19 at Madison Square Garden and closes December 19 at Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California.

Ticket sales are staggered by market. International partner presales begin Wednesday, September 9 at 10 a.m. local time in participating markets, with additional local presales following. General sales for the European and U.K. dates begin Friday, September 11 at 10 a.m. local time, although individual market arrangements can vary. Live Nation's U.K. listings, for example, show a September 10 Live Nation presale followed by the September 11 general onsale.

In the United States, general sales for New York, Chicago, Washington and Inglewood begin Thursday, September 10 at 10 a.m. local time. Ticketmaster lists the Madison Square Garden onsale for 10 a.m. ET, while the Intuit Dome sale begins at 10 a.m. PT. Detroit follows a different schedule, with tickets for both Fox Theatre concerts going on sale Tuesday, September 15 at 10 a.m. ET through 313 Presents, Live Nation and Ticketmaster.

Released in 1976, Songs in the Key of Life earned Wonder the third of his three Grammy Awards for Album of the Year, achieved Diamond certification and was selected for the Library of Congress' National Recording Registry. Its catalog includes “Sir Duke,” “I Wish,” “As,” “Isn't She Lovely,” “Love's in Need of Love Today” and “Pastime Paradise.”

For HitsCulture, the anniversary also reaches directly into hip-hop's sample vocabulary. Coolio transformed “Pastime Paradise” into the musical foundation of “Gangsta's Paradise,” while Will Smith's “Wild Wild West” drew from “I Wish.” That afterlife is part of what makes Songs in the Key of Life more than a revered soul album. Its melodies, arrangements and rhythmic ideas continued moving through Black popular music long after 1976, often reaching listeners who encountered Wonder's DNA before they knew the original record.

Fifty years later, Wonder is not simply commemorating the album with a handful of ceremonial appearances. He is putting the complete work back on arena stages across 18 nights, giving several generations a chance to hear the source material in the form that made so much of what followed possible.
